Remember that safety starts at the pier..!
Before starting, check:
- that you have enough gas for the journey there and back, considering
that unexpected occurrences are always possible in sea.
- the safety and marine equipment and on board equipment, considering
the sailing trip to be undertaken and the number of people on board.
- the conditions of the battery charge, if on board, and the proper
working of any radiotelephone.
Remember:
- to check regularly the efficiency of the motors;
- to give the engine air before starting up;
- to inform family or friends about your sailing trip, including
expected return time (see the form [PDF]
- [DOC]);
- to find about any possible obstacles (banks, reefs, streams etc.).
While sailing:
- turn off the engine and use oars, not the engine, while you are within 300
meters from the beach or in water where there are bathers,
- don’t ever carry more persons than those for which the boat is authorised
and distribute evenly the weight on board,
- pay attention to divers’ signal buoys (red flag with a diagonal white
band), slowing down and keeping at a distance of at least 100 meters.
